Custom Orthotics are shoe inserts that are designed to provide the support needed for your feet. When you visit with a podiatrist for orthotics, these devices are crafted based on the shape of your feet -  to match the contours of the foot with precision.

Why Do You Need Orthotics?

Wearing orthotics in your shoes can optimize the way you move. Orthotics fall into two categories:

  • Accommodative Orthotics: These are soft shoe inserts to add extra support and cushion for the sole of the foot. The most common uses of accommodative orthotics include treatment for painful calluses on the soles of the feet or diabetic foot ulcers.
  • Functional Orthotics:  If abnormal motion is occurring when you walk, then orthotics can be used to minimize the foot pain by changing the way the foot moves as it is placed with each step. They are semi-rigid shoe inserts, often created using graphite or plastic. Functional orthotics can be used for treatment for tendonitis, shin splints, and more.

It has been found that orthotics offer an effective treatment for a variety of foot and ankle problems. Your podiatrist might recommend this treatment for common foot issues such as bursitis, bunions, hammertoes, claw toes, plantar fasciitis, or foot/ankle/heel pain.

How are Orthotics Designed?

Keep in mind that orthotics from a licensed podiatrist are different than the over-the-counter products that can be purchased at a local store. Custom-made orthotics cost more, but they are worth the investment because of the long-term benefits that are available. Generic shoe inserts provide cushion, but they aren’t molded to your foot like prescription orthotics.

Our experienced team at Rock Canyon Foot and Ankle will complete a thorough evaluation of your feet and ankles to determine the specific type of support that is needed. These shoe inserts are created to accommodate the unique pathology and structure of your foot.

The perfect orthotic fit is created by taking a cast of the foot, then creating a 3D image to measure every contour of the foot. Often, this is done by having you step into a foam box or plaster slipper. Then, the orthotic is created using the model of your foot.
